Rumi and Roman and Twitter and us

Roman Albertovich Abalin (Russian: Роман Альбертович Абалин; born: January 24, 1998 [age 26]), better known online as NFKRZ (short for No-F*ckers), is a Russian YouTuber that uploads videos commentating about Russian society and current-events aimed towards English-speaking viewers in Western countries…

Roman leans on the left side of the political spectrum and has expressed support for gender equality, racial equality, LGBT rights, abortion and refugees/immigrants in the past. He is anti-war and condemned Vladimir Putin for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, making videos saying that ordinary Russians say no to war.

He went on hiatus on February 24, 2022 due to ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, saying that he does not feel that it’s okay to keep entertaining with the current situation. On March 16, 2022, he announced through his Telegram channel that he left Russia for an indefinite amount of time and is currently stationed in Tbilisi, Georgia. On Jan 4, 2024, he announced he had been granted a visa to move to the European Union, and on February 10, 2024, he announced he was moving to Lisbon, Portugal.

And one year later…

2022

All of which is a kind of preface to his latest vlog post, a screen shot from which is at the head of this post.

And this is what Roman is talking about:

I shared Roman’s latest vlog post 11 hours ago. Just looking at it again now, and it really is so wise (and bitterly funny at times.) He talks about how there are those on Twitter especially who hate him simply because he is Russian, who attribute all sorts of unlikely motives to him, and manage to ignore or twist his obvious track record for the two years or more I have followed him of being clearly opposed to what the Putin government is doing in Russia and especially in Ukraine. His exposures of Russian propaganda over that time have been masterly, and as always often screamingly funny. But also serious.

In this latest video he really demonstrates what a swamp Twitter has become. Since giving up Twitter, he says, “my quality of life has improved so much.”

I too gave up Twitter in November-December 2022 and joined Mastodon — which is not at all the same as Twitter, and that mostly in a good way! People are civilised there! I have no regrets at all about leaving Xhitter — and you should so as soon as possible. Your mental health will thank you….

NOTE ON MY ORIGINAL POST OF ROMAN”S POST: Roman the Russian. There are those who think ALL Russians, no exceptions, are evil and so Roman should be deported! Zack too, presumably. And Konstantin…. So sad. This is a very significant video with implications for the way we talk, on social media especially, about one side of another in any conflict. What Roman says applies just as much to talking about Israelis or Palestinians. Such a wise young man. But very entertaining too.
