And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

Spontaneously the 600 assembled in the public gallery of Australia’s House of Representatives burst into that song last night at this moment:

See Same-sex marriage signed into law by Governor-General, first weddings to happen from January 9 and ‘I’m glad I’ve lived this long to see it’: At 98, Neville Wills can finally marry the love of his life.

  1. I watched that live and, like Tanya P, wiped away a tear. It’s a clunky song but it was right for the moment.

Meanwhile I am totally not buying Turnbull’s attempt to own this as his achievement, though I can see that his reluctance to put any political skin at risk in the fight is not unlike Julia Gillard’s, for which she also forfeited pretty much all respect in our house.

Funnily enough, Christopher Pyne has stepped up in my estimation. He (and Brandis, to be grudgingly fair) were the only two senior coalition frontbenchers to stick their necks out. Julie Bishop’s equivocation has been a wonder to behold.
