It is also a Pioneer Memorial, being on the site of the old Catholic Cemetery with names going back as far as the First Fleet.
Street Chess, Wollongong
Posted on November 24, 2012 by Neil
Its days are numbered thanks to progress. One Illawarra Mercury reader noted “The chess board is the only thing in the mall that actually gets used regularly. It would be a shame to get rid of it.” It is to be replaced on another site, apparently.
UPDATE: A chessboard did eventually return, but is too small! The players prefer their temporary venue on the tables behind the Diggers Club. See It’s checkmate at Crown Street Mall again (January 2015) and Wollongong’s chess players leave Crown St Mall as new board is too small for the pieces (December 2015).
One man who was happy to have a few words identified himself as Ace Patrol (formerly Patroli, he said, but the i was dropped). While the conversation with the Mercury may have cost him his concentration, and then the game, he didn’t miss his target.
“It’s a bodgy job – and it’s not complicated,” he said.
“They messed the pieces up. There’s no shelter. There’s no width to the chairs – they’re too small.”
Would they ever return?
“If they set it up properly, of course.”
Council’s director of Infrastructure and works Mike Hyde said players had been consulted during the mall design process.
