Another Melbourne Cup tip…

One name stood out when the other day I briefly contemplated the 2016 Melbourne Cup list, run next Tuesday.

That’s Howard Be Thy Name! Now how can that not be a winner, eh! Trouble is, it may not be in the race: Darren Weir not convinced Howard Be Thy Name is ready for shot at Melbourne Cup.

“He went terribly last start. There were no excuses. None at all,” Weir said of the four-year-old stallion’s fifth. “I thought he’d run well but he just didn’t turn up.”

Weir said the South Australian Derby winner had worked well since and he was hoping he would bounce back. He added that although Howard Be Thy Name was guaranteed a start in the Melbourne Cup he would have to win the Bendigo Cup easily to even consider it.

“Realistically, he’s a year away from being ready for the Melbourne Cup,” the trainer said. “The plan is for him to run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes next.”…

This guy picks another horse:

After watching the replay of the Caulfield Cup so many times I know the race-caller’s description off by heart, I’ve got the Melbourne Cup winner for you – Scottish.

A week ahead of time, too. You can thank me later…

Trouble is that is listed as “doubtful” too at the moment.

Dear me, so another year goes by. See also Melbourne Cup and the Opal Card (2014) and Melbourne Cup again, and J-time (2015).
